What are NWA Wrestling Territories?
I known ECW was one when it was called Eastern Championship Wrestling, I also know TNA Wrestling was one, I am just curious what the differences are between a company like WWE and NWA Territories are.
An NWA “territory” was a region of the U.S. and Canada. There were many “territories” of varying sizes. Stu Hart’s “territory” was the largest and consisted of two States and most of three Canadian Provinces; Jim Crockett had the Carolinas and Georgia, Eddie Graham had Florida, Mike LeBell had Southern California, etc.
Each “territory” had one main promoter and he sat on the NWA Board of Governors. Each “territory” had several promotions within it’s boundaries.
The NWA Board of Governors consisted of all the “territory” promoters, and some of the other promoters from promotions within a “territory”. This Board established basic rules the NWA and all who were members of it would follow, it settled disputes between promoters, it chose the NWA World Champion (through votes from the members of the Board), and determined the World Champ’s travel schedule and title defenses (to ensure that each “territory” got their share of the World Champ’s appearances).
At one time Vince McMahon Senior was a member of this Board and his “territory” was a member of the NWA. A dispute involving the World Champion at the time (Buddy Rogers) and the man the Board wanted as Champ (Lou Thesz) caused a rift between Vince Senior and the NWA. Vince Senior withdrew his “territory” from the NWA and created his own “federation” he called World Wide Wrestling Federation (the WWE today).
Basically, the NWA was a nation-wide cooperation between dozens of wrestling promoters to ensure boundaries between “territories”. The WWWF was it’s own federation. Vince Senior still sat on the NWA Board of Governors and helped them to make decisions involving the NWA but his own “territory” was no longer part of it. He ran it as he saw fit, without input from the NWA.
Vince McMahon Junior does not recognize or acknowledge the NWA. He does what HE wants, when he wants, where he wants. He considers the WWE the only promotion in North America and he does not cooperate with anybody else. Vince rules the WWE single-handedly and HE makes (or approves) ALL decisions regarding the WWE.
Verne Gagne had a similar dispute with the NWA Board at roughly the same time as Vince Senior. Verne, too, withdrew his Minnesota “territory” from the NWA and created his own “federation” he called the AWA.
Jim Crockett combined his “territory” with that of Bill Watts (Oklahoma and Missouri) to create WCW. They, too, withdrew from the NWA to create their own “federation” in the hope of becoming large enough to compete with Vince Jr’s rapidly expanding WWF.
A few years ago TNA withdrew their membership in the basically powerless NWA to create THEIR own “federation”, with the same hope of competing with the WWE.
The NWA “territories” still exist today but in a MUCH smaller and weaker capacity. It is nothing like the “territories” days of old, and they do not have the cooperation and involvement of the WWE and TNA. It is just a loosely-joined association of very small promotions on the east side of the U.S.
