JWs: What do you think of this quote from a Trinitarian?
Daniel Wallace is a staunch Trinitarian. He is also a highly respected scholar of Biblical Greek in the Evangelical community. Also, I should add, he has not had good things to say about the NWT or JW’s beliefs.
This is how he opened an article he wrote about the Granville Sharp Rule:
“Few today would take issue with Rudolf Bultmann’s oft-quoted line that “In describing Christ as ‘God’ the New Testament still exercises great restraint.” The list of passages which seem explicitly to identify Christ with God varies from scholar to scholar, but the number is almost never more than a half dozen or so. As is well known, almost all of the texts are disputed as to their affirmation—due to textual or grammatical glitches—John 1:1 and 20:28 being the only two which are usually conceded without discussion.”
Actually, many Trinitarian scholars have conceded that the doctrine is on shakey ground. But they have to believe it, because it’s tradition.
The Lord Jesus Christ spoke disapprovingly about traditions of men that invalidate the Word of God.
The traditional doctrine of the Trinity is a prime example of just such a man-made tradition that violates the clear teaching of the Bible that God is one, not three.
And I don’t know what Wallace means about John 1:1 and 20:28 being “usually conceded without discussion.” I have read plenty of discussion about both verses, and volumes have been written about John 1:1. John 1:1 does not equate Jesus with God, rather it distinguishes between God [ho theos] and the Word who is divine or “a god” [theos] who is “with God.”
