Racing Pigeon Suppplies – Food
When you see what pigeons will eat in the city parks, and then see what the expert pigeon keeper feeds his birds on, you wonder how they survive. A pigeon’s diet is very varied, and therefore your pigeon and racing pigeon supplies need to complement that.
In the racing and exhibition world, the pigeon fancier is fanatical about the pigeon and racing pigeon supplies he feeds to his birds. For this article I shall not be talking about the intricacies of feeding hemp or lei tils etc. as these can be found elsewhere (links will be at the bottom of this article).
Needless to say, it is important to give your birds a balanced diet of high quality pigeon and racing pigeon supplies.
Most pigeon and racing pigeon supplies from merchants contain stock pigeon food, and this contains maize, wheat. ;as. beans and millet. Other seeds that can also be fed are barley, rolled oats, polished rice, lentils, vetches and canary seed. In addition to this a snail quantity of poultry pellets (layers pellets) can be included. Wild bird food is a good standby if you are having trouble finding proper food.
The racing pigeon supplies must be kept dry and clean. The size of container you use depends upon the number of birds you have, but anything from a large tin with a lid to a plastic dustbin is ideal. The other important point is to keep rats and mice out.
The food should be hard and clean, i.e. the grains should be as hard as nails and not dusty. One wonders how the birds can digest these seeds, but having seen Woodpigeons with crops full of acorns, I know how good a digestive system a pigeon has. Some people say that you should not feed same-season wheat, as they reckon it is not hard enough, but I think this depends on the season and the moisture content of the grain.
It is possible to mix your own feed starting with a basic 50% wheat and adding various grains; many people do this, but it is easier for the beginner to buy the ready mixed product. I know at the moment my pigeons will not touch beans or layers pellets, and too much of certain grains like maize can make your birds fat or give them diahorrea.
Buying from a feed merchant is cheaper than from a pet shop. You can find feed merchants in your local trade directories.
Racing Pigeon Supplies – Water
Clean drinking water is essential; some fanciers only give their birds bottled water. There are some infusions that can be added, such as garlic and herbs, and in fact there is a range of water soluble tonics and vitamins available* but most of these are for the serious pigeon breeder or racer
